About Ethereum
Ethereum launched in July 2015, founded by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders including Gavin Wood and Joseph Lubin, as a blockchain that runs arbitrary programs — smart contracts. It is the settlement layer for most of DeFi, the majority of stablecoin value, NFTs, and the emerging tokenized-asset market.
The network's defining transition was the Merge in September 2022, which replaced proof-of-work mining with proof-of-stake, cutting energy use by ~99.9% and turning ETH into a yield-bearing asset. Subsequent upgrades — Dencun in March 2024 (cheap 'blob' data for layer-2s) and Pectra in May 2025 (smart-account features and larger validator balances) — have focused on scaling through rollups rather than on the base chain itself.
ETH tokenomics
ETH launched via a 2014 public crowdsale of about 60 million coins plus a foundation allocation. Under proof-of-stake, new ETH is issued only to validators (well under 1% of supply per year at current staking levels), while EIP-1559 burns the base fee of every transaction. Net supply growth therefore oscillates around zero depending on network usage. There is no maximum supply.
