The gap to the record
Getting back to $293.31 from here would take a 4.1× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.

What moves Solana's price
- On-chain activity share: Solana hosts a large fraction of crypto's retail trading (memecoins, consumer apps); DEX volume and active-address trends translate into fee burn and staking yield.
- ETF and institutional access: spot Solana ETF filings and launches extend the pattern set by Bitcoin and Ethereum products, and each regulatory milestone reprices SOL.
- Network reliability record: Solana's history of outages (largely resolved since early 2024) means uptime itself is a tradable narrative — incident-free quarters build the institutional case.
- Firedancer and client diversity: the second validator client, built by Jump, addresses the single-client risk that has been the main technical criticism of the network.
- FTX estate overhang: large locked-SOL holdings from the FTX bankruptcy sold at auction created scheduled unlock supply that the market tracks.

About Solana
Solana launched in March 2020, founded by Anatoly Yakovenko of Solana Labs. Its architecture combines proof-of-stake with proof-of-history — a cryptographic clock that lets validators agree on transaction order without waiting on each other — which is how it achieves high throughput on one chain instead of pushing activity to layer-2s.
The network survived a near-death experience in the November 2022 FTX collapse (FTX and Alameda were its most visible backers) and rebuilt into the leading venue for retail on-chain activity, with an ecosystem spanning DeFi, DePIN projects, and consumer payments. Validator software is now maintained by Anza (a Solana Labs spin-off) as the Agave client, with Firedancer as an independent second client.
SOL tokenomics
SOL launched in 2020 with allocations to seed and venture investors, the team, and the Solana Foundation, plus public auction sales. Supply is disinflationary rather than capped: issuance began at 8% annually and declines toward a 1.5% floor, paid to stakers. Half of each transaction's base fee was historically burned; governance in 2025 shifted priority-fee economics toward validators (SIMD-96), a change that primarily affects validator revenue rather than total supply.
How to buy Solana
SOL trades on all major exchanges, including Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance. Holders can stake SOL by delegating to a validator from wallets like Phantom or Solflare without giving up custody, earning network inflation rewards in exchange.

What makes Solana different from Ethereum?
Solana scales on a single chain using proof-of-history for fast ordering, targeting sub-second finality and sub-cent fees, while Ethereum scales through layer-2 rollups that settle back to the main chain. The trade-off is that Solana's approach demands much more powerful validator hardware.
How fast is Solana?
The network processes thousands of transactions per second in practice, with block times around 400 milliseconds and typical fees well under a cent — fast and cheap enough for order-book trading and consumer payments directly on-chain.
Does Solana still have outages?
Outages were a real problem from 2021 to early 2024, when a bug caused the last multi-hour halt. Since then the network has run without a full outage, and the independent Firedancer client is designed to remove the single-client risk behind several past incidents.
Can you stake SOL?
Yes — SOL holders delegate stake to validators directly from self-custody wallets, keeping control of their coins while earning inflation rewards. Most of the circulating supply is staked this way.
Who created Solana?
Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer, co-founded Solana Labs and published the proof-of-history whitepaper in 2017. The mainnet went live in March 2020.
