What moves Bitcoin's price

  • Spot ETF flows: since US spot Bitcoin ETFs launched in January 2024, daily creations and redemptions by issuers like BlackRock and Fidelity have become the most-watched demand signal.
  • The halving cycle: block rewards halve roughly every four years (most recently April 2024), cutting new supply and historically framing multi-year price cycles.
  • Macro liquidity: Bitcoin trades like a risk asset with a hard-money narrative — Federal Reserve rate expectations and dollar strength move it, often before crypto-specific news does.
  • Corporate and sovereign treasuries: purchases or sales by large treasury holders and government seizures/auctions shift the visible supply on the market.

About Bitcoin

Bitcoin launched in January 2009, created by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system. It runs on its own blockchain secured by proof-of-work: miners expend energy to add blocks and are paid in newly issued bitcoin plus transaction fees.

Over time its dominant use has shifted from payments to store of value — 'digital gold' — a role reinforced by the 2024 approval of US spot ETFs, which gave traditional finance a regulated way to hold it. Notable events in its history include the 2013 and 2017 retail bubbles, the 2020–21 institutional adoption wave, the 2022 credit washout, and the ETF era that began in 2024.

BTC tokenomics

Supply is capped at 21 million BTC. New coins enter circulation as mining rewards, currently 3.125 BTC per block after the April 2024 halving, and the last bitcoin is projected to be mined around 2140. There was no pre-mine and there is no foundation allocation; distribution has been entirely through mining since the genesis block.

How to buy Bitcoin

Bitcoin is listed on effectively every crypto exchange, including Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance, and is also available indirectly through US spot ETFs in ordinary brokerage accounts. After purchase, coins can be left with the exchange or withdrawn to a self-custody wallet; long-term holders typically prefer self-custody or the ETF wrapper depending on whether they want the asset itself or price exposure.

Bitcoin FAQ

How many bitcoins are left to be mined?

Just under 1.2 million BTC of the 21 million cap remain to be mined. Issuance halves roughly every four years, so the remaining supply will trickle out until approximately 2140.

What was Bitcoin's all-time high?

Bitcoin's all-time high is about $126,000, reached in October 2025 during the ETF-era rally. Check the hourly-refreshed price at the top of this page for where it trades relative to that level.

Is Bitcoin the same as blockchain?

No. Blockchain is the ledger technology; Bitcoin is the first and largest network built on it. Thousands of other cryptocurrencies use their own blockchains.

Who controls Bitcoin?

No single entity. The protocol is maintained by open-source contributors (Bitcoin Core), enforced by thousands of independent nodes, and secured by miners. Changes require broad consensus across those groups.

Why does Bitcoin's price move so much?

Bitcoin trades globally 24/7 with no circuit breakers, and demand is driven by flows — ETF creations, treasury purchases, leverage in derivatives markets — against a fixed supply schedule. That combination produces sharper swings than most traditional assets.
