The gap to the record
Getting back to $4.84 from here would take a 58.3× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.
All-time low

What moves Optimism's price
- Superchain adoption: every chain built on the OP Stack — most visibly Coinbase's Base — contributes a share of sequencer revenue to the Optimism Collective, making third-party chain growth the core driver of the token's value case.
- Base's trajectory specifically: Base grew into one of the largest L2s outright; its fee contribution and its anchoring of the Superchain narrative matter more to OP than Optimism Mainnet's own activity.
- Ethereum blob economics: like all rollups, OP Chains' margins depend on Ethereum's data pricing set at Dencun and adjusted in later upgrades.
- Token unlocks and inflation: scheduled investor/team unlocks plus 2% annual issuance define the supply side.
- Fault-proof maturity: shipping and hardening permissionless fault proofs (live on OP Mainnet since mid-2024) reduces the trust assumptions critics cite against optimistic rollups.

About Optimism
Optimism launched its mainnet in late 2021, built by OP Labs out of early Ethereum scaling research (Plasma Group). It is an optimistic rollup like Arbitrum, but its strategy diverged: rather than one big chain, Optimism open-sourced its stack and turned itself into a network of chains — the Superchain — governed by the Optimism Collective.
The OP token launched by airdrop in May 2022. The Collective's governance is deliberately experimental, split between a Token House (OP holders) and a Citizens' House that allocates retroactive public-goods funding (RetroPGF) — an attempt to fund infrastructure that markets undersupply. The pivotal external event was Coinbase building Base on the OP Stack in 2023 and agreeing to share revenue with the Collective.
OP tokenomics
Initial supply was 4,294,967,296 OP (2^32), inflating 2% per year. Allocation: 25% to an ecosystem fund, 20% to retroactive public-goods funding, 19% to user airdrops (distributed across multiple rounds), 19% to core contributors, and 17% to investors — the last two vesting over years. Like ARB, OP pays no gas (fees are in ETH) and its claim on Superchain revenue runs through Collective governance rather than a direct fee switch.
How to buy Optimism
OP is listed on major exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance, and can be withdrawn to the OP Mainnet network, where gas is paid in ETH. Holding OP in self-custody allows delegation of voting power in Optimism's Token House governance.

What is the OP Stack and the Superchain?
The OP Stack is Optimism's open-source software for launching rollups; the Superchain is the network of chains built on it — including Coinbase's Base — that share standards, an interoperability roadmap, and contribute revenue to the Optimism Collective.
Does OP benefit when Base grows?
Indirectly but concretely: Base and other OP Chains pay a share of sequencer revenue to the Optimism Collective, which OP holders govern. Base's growth is the largest single input to that revenue stream.
What is the difference between Optimism and Arbitrum?
Both are optimistic rollups on Ethereum. Arbitrum runs the largest single L2 chain and monetizes its own activity; Optimism's bet is horizontal — licensing its stack to many chains and aggregating a share of all of their revenue.
What is RetroPGF?
Retroactive Public Goods Funding — Optimism's program that awards OP tokens to projects after they've proven useful (client teams, tooling, education), on the theory that funding proven impact beats funding promises. It has distributed hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of OP across multiple rounds.
Is OP used for gas on Optimism?
No. Transaction fees on OP Mainnet and other OP Chains are paid in ETH. OP is the governance and incentive token of the Optimism Collective.
