POL price context
Polygon's all-time high is $1.29, reached on March 13, 2024. At today's price of $0.0716, POL trades 94.4% below that peak. Its lowest recorded price was $0.0680 on July 1, 2026.
Over the past 30 days POL has moved −3.68% and over the past 90 days −25.57%.
Circulating supply is 10,688,558,283 POL , with no fixed maximum supply. POL has no supply cap: it dropped MATIC's 10 billion hard cap for a 2% annual emission — 1% to validator staking rewards, 1% to the community treasury — adding roughly 200 million POL a year to the ~10.7 billion circulating. An October 2025 community proposal to eliminate the inflation and fund buybacks from protocol revenue remains at draft stage.

The gap to the record
Getting back to $1.29 from here would take a 18.0× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinMarketCap - Polygon (prev. MATIC).
All-time low
Polygon's recorded all-time low is $0.0680, on July 1, 2026 (CoinMarketCap - Polygon (prev. MATIC)). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Polygon's price
- The emission debate: POL's 2% annual inflation is under open challenge — an October 2025 governance proposal would cut it to zero and direct 20% of quarterly net revenue to buyback-and-burn. Polygon Labs' CEO acknowledged it, validators (whose rewards it funds) pushed back, and as of mid-2026 nothing is enacted; any resolution either way is the token's clearest catalyst.
- Stablecoin payments traction: Polygon PoS is being retooled as a payments chain — about $2.7B in stablecoin supply and over $1B in stablecoin payment volume in the first half of 2025 — but, as on other fee-abstracted chains, payment volume in USDC/USDT does not mechanically become POL demand.
- The AggLayer question: Polygon's cross-chain settlement layer is live and POL stakers have received ecosystem airdrops (the AggLayer Breakout Program), but the 'one stake secures many chains' fee mechanics that would make POL the AggLayer's economic engine are still being built — value capture remains prospective.
- Strategy consolidation under Sandeep Nailwal: since the co-founder became Polygon Foundation CEO in June 2025, Polygon has cut everything outside PoS payments/RWA and AggLayer — most visibly sunsetting the zkEVM rollup (announced June 2025, sequencer off July 1, 2026), writing off the ~$250M Hermez acquisition behind it.
- Throughput upgrades as narrative: Heimdall v2 (July 2025) cut finality to ~5 seconds and the Rio hardfork (October 2025) pushed Polygon PoS toward 5,000 TPS with no reorgs, on a stated 'Gigagas' path to 100,000 TPS aimed squarely at payments and RWA settlement.
- The drawdown itself: POL trades roughly 94% below the $1.29 high its listing recorded in March 2024 (and ~97% below MATIC's 2021 peak), printing its all-time low on July 1, 2026 — persistent emission against depressed demand is the bear case made visible.

About Polygon
Polygon began in 2017 as Matic Network, founded in India by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and later Mihailo Bjelic, and its PoS chain — a proof-of-stake network that checkpoints to Ethereum — became one of the most-used chains of the 2021 cycle, when MATIC reached $2.92 and a top-10 market cap. The 'Polygon 2.0' redesign created POL in October 2023, and on September 4, 2024 the network executed the 1:1 MATIC-to-POL upgrade: automatic on Polygon PoS, manual via the migration portal for MATIC on Ethereum. Polygon Labs confirmed the migration 99% complete in September 2025, and Coinbase converted the last exchange balances that October.
The years since the migration have been a deliberate narrowing. Co-founders Kanani (2023) and Bjelic (2025) departed; Nailwal took over as Polygon Foundation CEO in June 2025 and consolidated around two products — Polygon PoS as a stablecoin-payments and tokenized-asset chain, and the AggLayer for cross-chain settlement. The clearest casualty was Polygon zkEVM, the ZK rollup built from the ~$250M Hermez acquisition: its sunset was announced in June 2025 and its sequencer shut down July 1, 2026, with remaining user balances snapshotted and made claimable on Ethereum. No exploit or regulatory action against the Polygon protocol itself is on record.
POL tokenomics
POL is the gas and staking token of Polygon PoS: stakers delegate to validators for a share of rewards and have been eligible for AggLayer ecosystem airdrops. Supply is uncapped — the migration replaced MATIC's 10 billion cap with a 2% annual emission split evenly between staking rewards and the community treasury, set for ten years and adjustable by governance. That design is now contested: a draft 2025 proposal to zero out inflation and buy back POL with protocol revenue is under discussion but not adopted, so roughly 200 million new POL still enter circulation each year.
How to buy Polygon
POL trades on Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, and Bybit — every venue that listed MATIC now lists POL, and exchange MATIC balances were converted 1:1 automatically. On-chain, POL is native gas on Polygon PoS and an ERC-20 on Ethereum; anyone still holding MATIC on Ethereum can upgrade 1:1 through the Polygon Portal, which remains open.

What happened to MATIC?
It was upgraded 1:1 to POL on September 4, 2024. MATIC on Polygon PoS converted automatically and POL became the network's gas and staking token; MATIC on Ethereum migrates manually via the Polygon Portal, which stays open. Polygon confirmed the migration 99% complete in September 2025, and exchanges like Coinbase converted remaining balances that October.
What was POL's all-time high?
The POL listing's high is $1.29, set March 13, 2024 (per CoinMarketCap; CoinGecko agrees) — while POL traded alongside MATIC before the upgrade. MATIC's famous $2.92 all-time high of December 2021 belongs to the retired MATIC listing and is not carried onto POL's price history, which begins at the token's October 2023 debut.
Does POL have a supply cap?
No. POL replaced MATIC's 10 billion cap with a 2% annual emission — half to staking rewards, half to the community treasury. A 2025 governance proposal to eliminate the inflation and fund buybacks from revenue is still at draft stage, so the emission remains in force.
What happened to Polygon zkEVM?
It was shut down. Polygon announced the sunset in June 2025 and turned the sequencer off on July 1, 2026, refocusing on Polygon PoS and the AggLayer. Users were given a year to bridge out; remaining balances were snapshotted and made claimable on Ethereum.
Is Polygon a Layer 2?
Polygon PoS is technically a proof-of-stake sidechain that checkpoints to Ethereum rather than a rollup, but it is universally grouped with Ethereum Layer 2s and its roadmap ties it deeper into Ethereum via the AggLayer. Its actual ZK rollup, Polygon zkEVM, was sunset in 2026.
