The gap to the record

Getting back to $9.82 from here would take a 157.5× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.

All-time low

Celo's recorded all-time low is $0.0556, on June 30, 2026 (CoinGecko). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Celo's price

  • Stablecoin and MiniPay adoption — with an honest caveat: MiniPay passed 10 million wallets and 271 million transactions across 60+ countries (Opera investor figures), but activity is denominated in USDT/USDC/cUSD and gas is payable in stablecoins, so usage growth does not mechanically translate into CELO demand. Closing that value-capture gap is the token's central question.
  • The L2 migration and Superchain position: since March 26, 2025 Celo is an OP Stack rollup using EigenDA for data availability, interoperable with Base and OP Mainnet — repositioning it from L1 competitor to Ethereum ecosystem member, with sequencer economics now part of the story.
  • Emissions and tokenomics votes: the Halvening halved issuance, and a live 2026 governance initiative proposes directing 50%+ of protocol revenue to CELO buybacks with partial burn — proposal-stage, not yet in force.
  • Payments competition: USDT and USDC on Tron, Stellar, and Base compete for the same remittance flows; Celo's differentiators are MiniPay's distribution and stablecoin gas.
  • Sequencer centralization, stated plainly: block production is initially run by cLabs with a decentralization roadmap; the old validator set became staked "community RPC providers" with reduced rewards.
  • The drawdown itself: CELO trades roughly 99% below its August 2021 high and printed its all-time low on June 30, 2026 — despite usage metrics at all-time highs, which is the value-capture gap made visible.

About Celo

Celo launched in April 2020, built by cLabs — founded by Rene Reinsberg, Marek Olszewski, and Sep Kamvar, with a16z among its earliest backers — around a thesis of phone-number-addressed payments for emerging markets. Its Mento protocol issues native stablecoins (cUSD, cEUR, cREAL), and native USDC and USDT arrived in 2024. The ecosystem's breakout product is MiniPay, launched by Opera in Africa in 2023 and now a standalone app.

The defining event is the migration: proposed by cLabs in July 2023, executed March 26, 2025 at block 31,056,500, moving the entire L1 state — accounts, balances, history — intact onto an OP Stack rollup with one-second blocks. Ecosystem history includes the $10M Moola Market lending exploit (October 2022, an app-level incident, not the protocol) and a post-migration reward-distribution bug fixed by governance in 2025 with no user funds at risk.

CELO tokenomics

CELO remains the default gas token post-migration, with fee abstraction letting users pay gas in cUSD, USDC, or USDT — a signature feature that predates and survived the L2 move. Staking continues: locked CELO elects community RPC providers and votes in governance. Epoch rewards now distribute via smart-contract calls at half their former rate; roughly 40% of the 1 billion cap is not yet circulating, spread across foundation and community releases.

SUPPLY
Supply is capped at 1 billion CELO with about 600 million circulating.

How to buy Celo

CELO trades on Binance, Coinbase (listed there under the ticker CGLD), Kraken, KuCoin, OKX, and Bybit. On-chain it lives on its own L2, bridgeable natively from Ethereum.

Celo FAQ

Is Celo a Layer 1 or a Layer 2?

A Layer 2 since March 26, 2025: it migrated its entire chain state onto an OP Stack rollup that posts to Ethereum and uses EigenDA for data availability, joining the Optimism Superchain alongside Base and OP Mainnet.

What is MiniPay?

A stablecoin wallet built by Opera on Celo, launched in Africa in 2023: phone-number-based payments with sub-cent fees. It passed 10 million activated wallets and 271 million transactions across 60+ countries by late 2025, per Opera's investor releases.

What are cUSD and Mento?

Mento is Celo's native stablecoin protocol; cUSD, cEUR, and cREAL are its stablecoins, used alongside native USDC and USDT on the chain. Minor cUSD peg wobbles have occurred in thin liquidity, but no catastrophic depeg is on record.

Can you still stake CELO after the migration?

Yes. Locked CELO now elects community RPC providers (the successors of the old validator set) and votes in governance; rewards continue at the reduced post-Halvening rate.

Can you pay Celo gas fees in stablecoins?

Yes — fee abstraction supports cUSD, USDC, and USDT for gas, with CELO as the default. It is one of the few chains where a user can transact without ever holding the native token, which is also why token value capture is the open question.
