About Litecoin
Litecoin launched on October 13, 2011, created by former Google engineer Charlie Lee as a lighter fork of Bitcoin's code: four times the supply cap (84 million), four times the block speed (2.5 minutes), and the Scrypt hashing algorithm in place of SHA-256. Positioned from the start as the silver to Bitcoin's gold, it has served as a proving ground for Bitcoin-compatible upgrades — it activated SegWit in May 2017, before Bitcoin, and hosted some of the earliest Lightning transactions — and since September 2014 Dogecoin has been merged-mined with it, making Litecoin's mining base the anchor of both networks' security.
Its history includes two defining controversies, both documented. In December 2017, days after LTC set its then-record near $375, Charlie Lee announced he had sold and donated all of his litecoin, stating that tweeting about the price while holding a large position was a conflict of interest; the price fell roughly 90% over the following year, and Lee — who still leads the Litecoin Foundation — has stood by the reasoning while acknowledging the timing.
