The gap to the record

Getting back to $0.7376 from here would take a 10.8× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinMarketCap — Dogecoin Historical Data (daily OHLC, verified via CMC data API); cross-check CoinGecko Dogecoin page.

All-time low

Dogecoin's recorded all-time low is $0.00008547, on May 7, 2015 (CoinMarketCap — Dogecoin Historical Data (daily OHLC, verified via CMC data API); cross-check CoinGecko Dogecoin page). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Dogecoin's price

  • Elon Musk: no asset this size is more tied to one person's attention. His tweets began moving DOGE in April 2019; his May 8, 2021 Saturday Night Live appearance — where he called Dogecoin 'a hustle' on air — knocked the price down more than 20% in an hour from its all-time high; the April 2023 swap of Twitter's logo for the Doge meme added ~20% in half an hour. A $258B lawsuit alleging he manipulated the coin was dismissed in August 2024.
  • Political and media attention cycles: the November 2024 announcement of the Musk-led 'Department of Government Efficiency' (D.O.G.E.) sent the coin up over 150% from Election Day to about $0.48 by early December 2024; it gave most of that back as the department wound down and Musk exited in May 2025.
  • Retail mania episodes: the January–May 2021 GameStop-era frenzy took DOGE from under half a cent to $0.73 — a move of more than 100x in four months driven by Reddit campaigns and celebrity tweets, not any protocol change. It still trades roughly 89% below that peak.
  • Constant new supply: about 5.26 billion DOGE of miner issuance hits the market every year with no cap and no burn, a steady headwind that demand has to absorb before the price can rise.
  • ETF access: the first US Dogecoin ETF (REX-Osprey's DOJE) launched in September 2025, and Grayscale's spot GDOG listed on NYSE Arca on November 24, 2025 — the first spot meme-coin ETFs — though first-day volumes were muted; flows through these wrappers are a new, watchable demand signal.
  • Bitcoin beta: between attention episodes, DOGE trades as a high-volatility satellite of the broader crypto market, amplifying Bitcoin's moves in both directions.

About Dogecoin

Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013, created by engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a deliberate joke pairing the Shiba Inu 'Doge' meme with a fork of Luckycoin, itself derived from Litecoin's Scrypt proof-of-work code. It runs its own layer-1 blockchain with one-minute blocks and sub-cent fees, and since 2014 it has been merged-mined with Litecoin, meaning most of its security is supplied by Litecoin mining pools. Both founders left the project years ago — Palmer became one of crypto's harshest critics — and development is maintained by the volunteer Dogecoin Core team, with the Dogecoin Foundation re-established in 2021 with advisors including Vitalik Buterin and Musk's family-office head Jared Birchall.

Its early identity was tipping and charity — funding the 2014 Jamaican bobsled team and a NASCAR car — and a thin real-payments use survives: Tesla has accepted DOGE for merchandise since January 2022, and the Dallas Mavericks and AMC ran acceptance programs in 2021. But payment volume is negligible next to speculation. The asset's defining chapter is 2021, when Reddit mania and Elon Musk's tweets drove it from under half a cent to $0.73 in four months, and its price has traded on attention — Musk's above all — ever since.

DOGE tokenomics

There is no maximum supply. Every block pays miners a fixed 10,000 DOGE (unchanged since 2015), which at roughly one block per minute adds about 5.26 billion coins per year with no halving schedule and no burn mechanism — the 100 billion cap in the original design was removed in 2014. Around 155 billion DOGE circulate today, so inflation runs near 3.4% annually and declines only as a percentage of the growing base. Distribution has been through mining since launch, with no pre-mine or foundation allocation of note; there is no staking and no mechanism that accrues value to holders.

NEW SUPPLY / YEAR

How to buy Dogecoin

DOGE is listed on effectively every major exchange, including Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance, and since late 2025 is also available through US ETFs — REX-Osprey's DOJE and spot products from Grayscale (GDOG) and Bitwise (BWOW) — in ordinary brokerage accounts. Coins can be withdrawn to any wallet that supports Dogecoin's own chain; the practical consideration is not access but volatility, since the asset routinely moves double-digit percentages on a single headline.

Dogecoin FAQ

Why does Elon Musk affect the Dogecoin price?

Because attention is the asset's main demand driver and Musk commands more of it than anyone. His tweets have moved DOGE since April 2019, his May 2021 SNL appearance coincided with the all-time high and the start of a fall of more than 20% in an hour, and the November 2024 'D.O.G.E.' government-department announcement briefly tripled the price. A lawsuit alleging he manipulated the coin was dismissed in August 2024.

What was Dogecoin's all-time high?

About $0.73 on May 7, 2021, at the peak of that year's retail mania and on the eve of Musk's Saturday Night Live appearance. It has traded far below that level since — check the hourly-refreshed price at the top of this page for the current distance from the peak.

Does Dogecoin have a supply cap?

No. Miners receive a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, about 5.26 billion new coins a year, forever — no halving and no burn. Inflation shrinks as a percentage of the growing supply but the absolute dilution never stops, which is a structural difference from Bitcoin's 21 million cap.

Is Dogecoin actually used for anything?

Modestly. It works as cheap, fast payment money — roughly one-minute blocks and sub-cent fees — and Tesla has accepted it for merchandise since January 2022, following earlier programs by AMC and the Dallas Mavericks. But payment volume is trivial next to speculative trading, and the coin has no smart contracts or application ecosystem.

Who develops Dogecoin today?

The volunteer Dogecoin Core team, supported by the Dogecoin Foundation that was re-established in 2021 with advisors including Vitalik Buterin and Musk's family-office manager Jared Birchall. Both original creators left long ago — co-founder Jackson Palmer is now an outspoken critic of the industry — and network security relies largely on merged mining with Litecoin pools rather than a native miner base.
