FIL price context
Filecoin's all-time high is $236.84, reached on April 1, 2021. At today's price of $0.6970, FIL trades 99.7% below that peak. Its lowest recorded price was $0.6776 on June 6, 2026.
Over the past 30 days FIL has moved −10.50% and over the past 90 days −24.68%.
Circulating supply is 813,298,483 FIL , with no fixed maximum supply. Max supply is 2 billion FIL: 70% to storage mining (including a 300M mining reserve that needs a governance vote to release), 15% Protocol Labs, 10% fundraising, 5% the Filecoin Foundation. Investor vesting completed in 2023 and team vesting runs out around October 2026 — but block-reward emissions still exceed gas burns, so the float grows year over year.

The gap to the record
Getting back to $236.84 from here would take a 339.8× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.
All-time low

What moves Filecoin's price
- Paid storage demand: utilization is the network's own chosen metric — about 1.1 EiB actually stored against ~3.0 EiB of capacity (36% in Q3 2025, rising partly because unpaid capacity is exiting), and the official 2026 strategy is to scale paid demand rather than supply.
- The FVM ecosystem: smart contracts went live in March 2023, enabling DeFi that locks FIL as storage-provider collateral, and the "Filecoin Onchain Cloud" launched in November 2025 as the network's next product push.
- The AI data-storage narrative: Filecoin's roadmap and marketing now center on AI dataset hosting, with named clients like the Internet Archive, the Smithsonian, and MIT Open Learning.
- Emissions versus burns: over 100 million new FIL enter circulation annually against modest fee burns, a persistent supply headwind; live governance proposals to burn the ~283M-FIL mining reserve (FIP-0093, "Daybreak") are a supply catalyst in either direction.
- Storage-provider economics: raw capacity fell 10% quarter-over-quarter in Q3 2025 as smaller providers exited; provider profitability decides how much FIL gets locked as collateral versus sold.
- Regulatory overhang, stated plainly: in May 2023 SEC staff told Grayscale they view FIL as a security (Grayscale disagreed and withdrew the trust's registration; no enforcement against Protocol Labs has followed). The token has fallen roughly 99.7% from its April 2021 high, printing its all-time low in June 2026.
“utilization is the network's own chosen metric — about 1.”
About Filecoin
Filecoin was created by Juan Benet's Protocol Labs — the team behind IPFS — and funded by a then-record $257 million ICO in 2017, conducted under the SAFT framework and restricted to accredited investors, with tokens delivered at the October 2020 mainnet launch three years later. Days after launch, large miners throttled capacity in protest of the collateral-and-vesting model, and the protocol answered with FIP-0004, making a quarter of block rewards immediately spendable.
The network sells contract-based storage: deals expire and must be renewed, unlike Arweave's pay-once permanence, which makes Filecoin the closer analog to a decentralized S3 for large, dynamic datasets. Storage providers earn block rewards by proving they store data, backed by slashable collateral, and verified clients under Filecoin Plus give providers a tenfold power multiplier for storing real data rather than padding capacity.
FIL tokenomics
FIL uses hybrid minting: most mining rewards release on a curve tied to network growth against a baseline target, not just time. Every message burns its base fee (an EIP-1559-style mechanism), and penalties burn more, but in recent years emissions have exceeded burns — the network is net inflationary at roughly 100M+ FIL per year, with about 800 million circulating of the 2 billion cap. Whether governance burns the remaining ~283M mining reserve is an open, actively debated question.
How to buy Filecoin
FIL is listed essentially everywhere: Binance, Coinbase, Kraken (spot and futures), KuCoin, Gate, and dozens of other venues, with deep USDT, USDC, and fiat pairs.
Filecoin FAQ
What is the difference between Filecoin and Arweave?
Filecoin sells renewable, time-bound storage contracts priced by an open market — data persists only while deals are renewed. Arweave sells one-time-payment permanent storage funded by an endowment. Filecoin suits large, changing datasets; Arweave suits small immutable data like archives and NFT metadata.
Is Filecoin storage actually used?
Partly, and improving: about 1.1 EiB of real data is stored against ~3.0 EiB of capacity — 36% utilization as of Q3 2025 — with clients including the Internet Archive and the Smithsonian. Much historical "capacity" was never client data, which is why the 2026 strategy targets paid demand.
What is the FVM?
The Filecoin Virtual Machine, live since March 2023 — an EVM-compatible smart-contract layer that enabled DeFi on Filecoin (lending against provider collateral), DataDAOs, and programmable storage deals.
Can you still mine FIL?
Yes, as a storage provider — but it is industrial, not hobbyist: proving storage requires serious hardware (high-RAM servers, NVMe, a capable GPU for sealing) plus FIL collateral, with automatic penalties for downtime.
Why is FIL down so much from 2021?
The ~$237 April 2021 top printed on a thin float right after mainnet, when vesting had barely begun. Since then circulating supply has grown toward 800 million while paid demand stayed a fraction of capacity, and in May 2023 SEC staff called FIL a security in the Grayscale matter. The all-time low came in June 2026, about 99.7% below the peak.
