About BitTorrent
The BitTorrent protocol was designed by Bram Cohen and released in 2001, and it became one of the most widely deployed peer-to-peer file-transfer protocols in use. There was no token for its first eighteen years. Justin Sun's Tron acquired BitTorrent Inc. in 2018, and the BTT token launched in January 2019 through a Binance Launchpad sale that sold out within minutes. BTT began as a TRC-10 token on Tron, designed to pay seeders for bandwidth.
In January 2022 the project redenominated: holders of the original BTT received 1,000 new tokens for each old one, taking total supply to roughly 990 trillion. CoinMarketCap tracks the post-swap asset as "BitTorrent [New]" (the listing this page follows) and keeps the pre-swap asset alive as the superseded ticker BTTOLD. The same period brought BitTorrent Chain, a cross-chain network on which BTT is gas, and BitTorrent File System for decentralised storage.
