Over the past 30 days RIF has moved −11.26% and over the past 90 days +83.50%.

Circulating supply is 1,000,000,000 RIF , against a maximum supply of 1,000,000,000 RIF. RIF has a fixed 1,000,000,000 supply that is 100% circulating, so market capitalisation and fully diluted valuation are the same figure and there is no unlock overhang.

The gap to the record

Getting back to $0.4559 from here would take a 5.2× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.

All-time low

Rootstock Infrastructure Framework's recorded all-time low is $0.0091, on June 12, 2019 (CoinGecko). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Rootstock Infrastructure Framework's price

  • RIF is not RBTC, and that caps its demand. Gas on Rootstock is paid in RBTC, the 1:1 Bitcoin-pegged native asset. RIF's own sinks are narrower: registering RNS names, minting the USDRIF stablecoin, staking into the RootstockCollective, and gas abstraction through RIF Relay, which lets a user pay fees in an ERC-20 without holding RBTC. Growth in Rootstock usage does not mechanically bid RIF the way it would a true gas token — this is the single most important thing to understand about the token.
  • Bitcoin coupling through merged mining: Rootstock's own Q1 2026 report puts 84.01% of Bitcoin's total hashrate — an average of 833.92 EH/s — merge-mining Rootstock at no extra energy cost to miners. RIF is therefore a high-beta proxy for the Bitcoin-DeFi (BTCfi) narrative; capital rotating into Bitcoin layer-2s lifts it, and rotation out drains it.
  • The RootstockCollective DAO: RIF is staked 1:1 into stRIF, which confers voting power over grant funding and a share of Collective Rewards. Participation is thin, though — the DAO's own site reports about 35 million RIF staked, roughly 3.5% of the 1 billion supply.
  • Adoption is genuinely thin, and it matters. Rootstock's chain TVL is around $94.6 million per DefiLlama, down from a peak near $260 million in mid-2025, and independent research puts daily active addresses at a peak of roughly 420 in Q2 2025, falling to about 280 by Q4 2025 — after eight years live. The security is world-class; the usage is not.
  • The framework has narrowed sharply from its original pitch. RIF was launched around storage, communications and payments (Lumino) as well as naming; the rif-storage-js and lumino repositories were both archived in August 2022 and are read-only. Today's RIF Suite is the token, RNS, RIF Relay and the rBTC Flyover — a much smaller surface than the 2018-19 vision.
  • The long drawdown: RIF peaked at $0.4559 in April 2021 and trades roughly 71% below that. Because supply is fully circulating, there is no unlock overhang to blame — the decline is a demand story about what the token is actually used for.

“Growth in Rootstock usage does not mechanically bid RIF the way it would a true gas token — this is the single most important thing to understand about the token.”

About Rootstock Infrastructure Framework

Rootstock, originally RSK, went live on mainnet on 2 January 2018, making it the oldest production EVM-compatible sidechain secured by Bitcoin. Its design rests on three pillars: merged mining, in which Bitcoin miners reuse the same proof-of-work to mine Rootstock blocks at no additional energy cost; the PowPeg, a federated two-way bridge that mints RBTC against locked BTC; and EVM compatibility for smart contracts. The chain has run without a network outage or chain reset since launch.

The RIF token arrived after the chain, as the unit for a suite of infrastructure services layered on top of it. The company behind it, originally RSK Labs and then IOV Labs, now operates publicly as RootstockLabs; Daniel Fogg was appointed chief executive on 22 May 2023, with founder Diego Gutiérrez Zaldívar moving to chairman. Ecosystem funding has since been pushed out to the RootstockCollective, a DAO in which RIF holders stake into stRIF to vote on grants and reward builders. RSK was rebranded to Rootstock along the way, which is why the token's full name — Rootstock Infrastructure Framework — still carries the older RSK slug on some aggregators.

RIF tokenomics

RIF has a maximum and total supply of 1,000,000,000 tokens, and 100% of it circulates — market capitalisation and fully diluted valuation are identical, and there is no vesting cliff or unlock schedule left to absorb. Its utility is service-layer rather than gas: RIF registers RNS names, mints the USDRIF stablecoin (a US-dollar token over-collateralised by RIF), can pay transaction costs indirectly through the RIF Relay gas-abstraction relayer, and is staked 1:1 into stRIF for RootstockCollective governance and Collective Rewards. By the DAO's own figures roughly 35 million RIF — about 3.5% of supply — is staked. The token's contracts have been audited by Coinspect. Rootstock itself does not run on RIF: gas is paid in RBTC, so the chain's fee revenue does not accrue to RIF holders.

How to buy Rootstock Infrastructure Framework

RIF trades on centralised venues including Binance (RIF/USDT), LBank, MEXC, Gate, Bitget and Pionex, and on-chain through Rootstock DEXs such as Oku Trade. One practical note: moving or using RIF on Rootstock requires RBTC to pay gas, unless you route through a relayer. This page carries no affiliate links and recommends no venue.

Rootstock Infrastructure Framework FAQ

Is RIF the gas token of Rootstock?

No — and this is the most common misunderstanding about it. Rootstock's gas token is RBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-pegged asset used to pay transaction fees. RIF is a separate token for infrastructure services on top of the chain. The one nuance is RIF Relay, a gas-abstraction system that lets a user pay fees in an ERC-20 rather than holding RBTC directly — but the protocol-level gas asset is still RBTC.

What is Rootstock?

A Bitcoin sidechain, EVM-compatible and live since 2 January 2018, that brings smart contracts to Bitcoin. It is bridged to Bitcoin by the PowPeg, and its native gas asset RBTC is pegged 1:1 to BTC.

Is Rootstock really secured by Bitcoin miners?

Yes, through merged mining: Bitcoin miners reuse the same hashing work to mine Rootstock blocks, so it costs them no additional energy. Rootstock's Q1 2026 report puts 84.01% of Bitcoin's hashrate — an average 833.92 EH/s — participating. That hashrate is itself pool-concentrated, so Rootstock inherits Bitcoin's pool-concentration risk directly.

What is RIF actually used for?

Registering RNS domain names, minting the USDRIF stablecoin, staking as stRIF for RootstockCollective governance and rewards, and paying fees indirectly via RIF Relay. It is not used to pay gas on Rootstock — RBTC is.

Is the Bitcoin bridge trustless?

Not fully, and it is fair to say so. RBTC is not native Bitcoin: it is minted against BTC locked in the PowPeg, a federated bridge run by a set of 'pegnatories' operating tamper-resistant hardware security modules whose firmware comes from RootstockLabs. Rootstock's own defence is a defence-in-depth argument — that no single group (miners, functionaries, hardware manufacturer or developers) can steal the pegged funds on its own — which is a claim that no one party can, not that the peg is trustless. The bridge is also slow by design: peg-ins require 100 Bitcoin blocks.

What is the RootstockCollective?

A DAO in which RIF is staked 1:1 into stRIF, granting voting power over grant funding and access to Collective Rewards, where stakers allocate their stRIF to builders and share in the rewards. By the DAO's own numbers roughly 35 million RIF — about 3.5% of supply — is staked, so governance participation is thin.
