Circulating supply is 4,074,529,886 SUI , against a maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 SUI. SUI's supply is fixed at 10 billion, set at genesis, but only about 40% circulates — roughly 6% was liquid at the May 2023 mainnet launch, and the rest unlocks in monthly cliffs running through 2030, with the largest tracked bucket (over half of supply) scheduled for release after 2030. New supply hitting the market is a structural feature of this token, not an occasional event.

What moves Sui's price
- Token unlocks: with ~60% of supply still locked, monthly cliff unlocks — for example, 42.62 million SUI (~$40M) on May 1, 2026, split among Series B investors, the community reserve, early contributors, and Mysten Labs — are a recurring, scheduled source of sell-side supply through 2030.
- Spot ETF flows: US spot SUI ETFs launched on Nasdaq in February 2026 — Canary's staked SUIS and Grayscale's GSUI on February 18, then 21Shares' TSUI on February 24 — giving the token a regulated demand channel whose creations and redemptions are now watchable.
- Network reliability, stated plainly: Sui's mainnet has fully halted block production multiple times — roughly two hours on November 21, 2024 (a congestion-control scheduling bug put every validator in a crash loop), about six hours on January 14, 2026, and 6 hours 44 minutes on May 28, 2026 (a crash bug in new gas-charging logic), with a further brief stall two days later. Each outage stopped all transactions chain-wide and knocked the price.
- The Cetus hack and its aftermath: on May 22, 2025 Sui's largest DEX was exploited for ~$223M via an overflow bug in its liquidity math; validators coordinated to ignore the attacker's addresses, freezing ~$162M, and an on-chain vote returned the funds. The rescue worked — Cetus relaunched in 17 days with a $30M Sui Foundation loan — but the validator-level freeze opened a lasting debate about how decentralized Sui really is.
- Ecosystem activity and DeFi TVL: as a general-purpose layer-1, SUI demand tracks usage of its DeFi, gaming, and consumer apps, and it competes for the same capital and developers as other high-throughput chains like Solana and its Move-language sibling Aptos.

About Sui
Sui was developed by Mysten Labs, founded in 2021 by engineers from Meta's abandoned Diem stablecoin project — CEO Evan Cheng, CTO Sam Blackshear (creator of the Move language at Meta), CPO Adeniyi Abiodun, chief scientist George Danezis, and cryptographer Kostas Chalkias. The mainnet went live in May 2023. Its distinguishing design is an object-centric data model: assets are objects with explicit ownership, so transactions that don't touch the same objects execute in parallel, targeting sub-second finality and high throughput.
Its history since launch cuts both ways. On one side: top-30 market cap, a growing DeFi and gaming ecosystem, and US spot ETFs from Canary, Grayscale, and 21Shares in February 2026. On the other: full-network outages in November 2024, January 2026, and May 2026, and the May 2025 Cetus exploit, where validators froze ~$162M of the ~$223M stolen and an on-chain vote returned it — a recovery that showcased coordination but also concentrated validator power.
SUI tokenomics
Fixed 10 billion SUI cap. Headline allocation: about 50% to the community reserve and ecosystem programs, 20% to early contributors, 14% to Series A and B investors, 10% to the Mysten Labs treasury, and 6% to community access programs and sales. Roughly 40% circulated as of mid-2026; the remainder vests in monthly cliff unlocks through 2030, with unlock trackers putting the largest bucket — over half of total supply — in a 'released after 2030' category. Staking rewards for delegated proof-of-stake come from stake subsidies plus gas fees.
How to buy Sui
SUI trades on every major exchange, including Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, and Upbit. Since February 2026, US investors can also get exposure in ordinary brokerage accounts through Nasdaq-listed spot ETFs: Canary's staked SUIS, Grayscale's GSUI, and 21Shares' TSUI.

What happened in the Cetus hack?
On May 22, 2025, Cetus — Sui's largest decentralized exchange — was exploited for about $223 million through an overflow bug in its liquidity-pool math. Around $60M was bridged to Ethereum, but Sui validators coordinated to ignore transactions from the attacker's addresses, freezing roughly $162M, which an on-chain vote later returned. Cetus relaunched 17 days later with a $30M Sui Foundation loan.
Has the Sui network ever gone down?
Yes, several times: block production halted for about two hours in November 2024 (a scheduling bug crashed every validator), roughly six hours in January 2026, and 6 hours 44 minutes in May 2026 due to a gas-charging bug, with a further brief stall days later. Each incident stopped all transactions network-wide until validators deployed a fix.
What was SUI's all-time high?
About $5.35, reached on January 6, 2025, per CoinMarketCap. The all-time low was roughly $0.36 in October 2023, months after mainnet launch. Check the hourly-refreshed price at the top of this page for where it trades relative to those levels.
When do SUI tokens unlock?
Continuously: only about 40% of the 10 billion supply circulated as of mid-2026, with monthly cliff unlocks to investors, contributors, the community reserve, and Mysten Labs running through 2030 — and unlock trackers place over half of total supply in a bucket released after 2030.
How is Sui different from Solana?
Both target high throughput and low fees, but Sui uses the Move language and an object-centric model where independent transactions execute in parallel by design, while Solana uses its own runtime and account model. Sui's closest technical sibling is Aptos, built by another ex-Meta Diem team using Move.
