Circulating supply is 34,269,418,025 XLM , against a maximum supply of 50,001,806,812 XLM. 100 billion XLM were created at launch in 2014; in October 2019 a protocol vote removed the 1% annual inflation, and in November 2019 the Stellar Development Foundation burned 55 billion XLM — over half of everything in existence — fixing total supply at 50 billion. About 34 billion circulate; the remaining roughly 16 billion sit with SDF under its published mandate, a disclosed overhang that releases into the market as the foundation funds ecosystem growth.

The gap to the record

Getting back to $0.9381 from here would take a 5.5× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from Stellar price | CoinMarketCap.

All-time low

Stellar's recorded all-time low is $0.0012, on November 18, 2014 (Stellar price | CoinMarketCap). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Stellar's price

  • SDF's holdings: the Stellar Development Foundation holds roughly 16 billion of the 50 billion XLM — about a third of total supply — under a published mandate covering development, growth, and ecosystem investment. Those disclosed but unlocked reserves are a permanent supply overhang, and the foundation's 2019 decision to burn 55 billion XLM unilaterally is the standing reminder of how concentrated supply control is.
  • Stablecoin and payments integrations: Stellar's demand case is built on anchors — Circle has issued native USDC on the network since 2021, MoneyGram's Access service (launched from an October 2021 partnership) lets users cash USDC in and out at physical locations worldwide, and PayPal's PYUSD went live on Stellar in September 2025 after NYDFS sign-off on the June 2025 plan. Each new issuer or corridor is the headline type XLM trades on.
  • Soroban adoption: smart contracts arrived late — Protocol 20 put the Rust-based Soroban layer on mainnet on February 20, 2024, backed by a $100 million SDF adoption fund — so DeFi and tokenized real-world-asset activity on Stellar is measured against chains that had a multi-year head start.
  • The XRP shadow: Stellar was founded by Jed McCaleb after he left Ripple in 2013, uses a similar fast-settlement design, and competes for the same cross-border payments narrative, so XLM frequently moves in sympathy with XRP on Ripple-related regulatory and adoption news rather than on its own headlines.
  • Fee burn is negligible, issuance is zero: with inflation removed in 2019 and transaction fees of fractions of a cent, supply is effectively static — price action is driven almost entirely by demand flows and SDF disbursements, not by any issuance schedule.

About Stellar

Stellar launched in July 2014, created by Jed McCaleb — founder of Mt. Gox (which he sold in 2011) and co-founder of Ripple, where he was CTO until leaving in 2013 over disagreements about direction — together with Joyce Kim through the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation, seeded by a $3 million Stripe investment. The network reaches consensus through the Stellar Consensus Protocol, in which validators agree on transactions without mining, settling payments in seconds for fractions of a cent; McCaleb has since shifted his focus to his aerospace company Vast.

The network's defining supply event came in late 2019: an October protocol vote removed the original 1% annual inflation, and on November 4–5 the SDF burned 55 billion XLM — more than half the total supply — cutting it from about 105 billion to a fixed 50 billion, saying it could not productively distribute that much. Since then the story has been real payments plumbing: Circle's native USDC (2021), MoneyGram cash on/off-ramps (from 2021), Franklin Templeton's on-chain money fund, Soroban smart contracts on mainnet in February 2024, and PayPal's PYUSD stablecoin live on Stellar since September 2025.

XLM tokenomics

100 billion XLM were created at the network's 2014 launch with 1% annual inflation; a validator vote removed inflation on October 28, 2019, and the SDF's November 2019 burn of 55 billion XLM fixed total supply at 50 billion with no new issuance ever. Roughly 34 billion XLM circulate today, with the remaining ~16 billion held by the SDF under its public mandate for development, ecosystem growth, and investments — funds that enter circulation as the foundation spends them. Transaction fees (a fraction of a cent) are burned, but at volumes too small to meaningfully shrink supply.

How to buy Stellar

XLM trades on effectively every major exchange, including Coinbase, Kraken, and Binance, typically against USD, USDT, and BTC. After purchase it can be left on the exchange or withdrawn to a self-custody wallet; note that Stellar accounts require a small XLM base reserve to remain active, so wallets keep a minimum balance locked.

Stellar FAQ

What is the difference between Stellar and XLM?

Stellar is the payments network; XLM — the lumen — is its native asset. XLM pays transaction fees, funds the minimum reserve every account must hold, and serves as a bridge asset when two currencies on the network lack a direct market.

How are Stellar and Ripple related?

Jed McCaleb co-founded Ripple and was its CTO before leaving in 2013 over disagreements about direction; he launched Stellar in 2014 with Joyce Kim as a nonprofit-governed alternative with a similar fast-settlement, payments-first design. The projects share a founder and a use case but run separate networks with separate assets, and XLM often trades in sympathy with XRP news.

Why did Stellar burn half its supply?

In November 2019 the Stellar Development Foundation burned 55 billion XLM — over half of all lumens — cutting total supply from about 105 billion to a fixed 50 billion, saying it could not productively distribute that much. The same autumn, an October 2019 protocol vote removed the network's 1% annual inflation, so no new XLM has been created since.

Does Stellar have smart contracts?

Yes, since February 20, 2024, when Protocol 20 activated Soroban — a smart-contract layer written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly — on mainnet, backed by a $100 million SDF adoption fund. Before Soroban, Stellar supported only built-in operations like asset issuance and payments.
