What moves Polkadot's price
- The tokenomics regime change: referendum 1139 (late 2024) replaced percentage inflation with fixed 120M DOT/year issuance, and referendums 1710 and 1828 — enacted March 2026 — imposed a 2.1 billion hard cap and cut issuance 53.6% to ~56.9M DOT/year, tapering by 13.14% of the remaining un-issued supply every two years. Whether a supply cap can offset weak demand is the live debate around DOT.
- The JAM roadmap: Gavin Wood's Join-Accumulate Machine (graypaper April 2024) is slated to replace the relay chain entirely. A public testnet launched in January 2026 with 43 implementation teams competing for a 10M-DOT Web3 Foundation prize pool; mainnet proposals are targeted for late 2026, and slippage or delivery on that schedule is a headline driver.
- Coretime demand: Agile Coretime (live September 2024) replaced two-year parachain slot auctions with monthly and on-demand blockspace sales. Auctions once locked huge amounts of DOT in crowdloans — a big part of the 2021 run — so coretime sales are now the honest, and much smaller, demand signal.
- US spot ETF access: 21Shares' TDOT, the first US spot Polkadot ETF, listed on Nasdaq on March 6, 2026 with Coinbase as custodian, and Grayscale has filed as well; creations and redemptions give DOT a regulated demand channel it lacked in prior cycles.
- Treasury spending, stated plainly: Polkadot's on-chain treasury reported $87 million spent in the first half of 2024 — $37 million of it on marketing and outreach — against a $245 million balance, an estimated two-year runway that drew broad community criticism even though every transaction was published in a public spreadsheet. Treasury sales of DOT and the credibility of its spending both feed the price.
- Staking flows: DOT uses nominated proof-of-stake with a large share of supply staked (85% of new issuance goes to stakers, 15% to the treasury); changes in staking participation move liquid float.
“referendum 1139 (late 2024) replaced percentage inflation with fixed 120M DOT/year issuance, and referendums 1710 and 1828 — enacted March 2026 — imposed a 2.”
About Polkadot
Polkadot was created by Gavin Wood — Ethereum co-founder, author of its yellow paper, and creator of Solidity — from a 2016 whitepaper, stewarded by the Swiss Web3 Foundation with Parity Technologies as lead developer. Its October 2017 ICO raised about $145 million, and weeks later a user triggered a bug in Parity's multisig library contract, permanently freezing roughly 513,000 ETH — including around 60% of Polkadot's ICO proceeds. Recovery attempts were rejected by the Ethereum community and the funds were never recovered; the project continued on later private rounds. Mainnet launched in May 2020, and DOT became transferable in August 2020 alongside a community-voted 1:100 redenomination — which is why CoinMarketCap's slug is 'polkadot-new'.
The design is a central relay chain selling shared security to app-specific 'parachains', originally allocated by two-year slot auctions funded by crowdloans (first held November 2021, at the market top). Polkadot 2.0 retired that model: Agile Coretime (September 2024) sells blockspace monthly or on demand like cloud compute, Polkadot Hub launched in late 2025 as a unified EVM-compatible portal, and the JAM upgrade — testnet live since January 2026 — is intended to replace the relay chain itself. Core development activity remained top-ten globally in 2026 even as the token set new lows.
DOT tokenomics
DOT's supply model has been reformed twice by on-chain governance. It launched uncapped at ~10% annual inflation; referendum 1139 (passed late 2024, implemented via runtime v1.3.4) switched to fixed linear issuance of 120M DOT per year, split 85% to stakers and 15% to the treasury. Referendum 1710 — passed September 2025 with 81% support and enacted March 2026 in runtime v2.1.0 — imposed a permanent 2.1 billion hard cap, cutting issuance to about 56.9M DOT/year and reducing it by 13.14% of the remaining un-issued supply every two years until the cap is reached. About 1.69 billion DOT circulate, so roughly 400 million more will still be issued over the coming decades.
How to buy Polkadot
DOT is listed on effectively every major exchange — Coinbase, Binance, Kraken, OKX — with deep fiat and stablecoin pairs, and since March 2026 US investors can also get regulated spot exposure through 21Shares' TDOT ETF on Nasdaq. Holders who stake natively earn issuance rewards; ETF holders get price exposure only.
Polkadot FAQ
Why is Polkadot listed as 'polkadot-new' on CoinMarketCap?
In August 2020, when DOT became transferable, the community voted a 1:100 redenomination: 10 million old DOT became 1 billion new DOT. CoinMarketCap created a fresh listing for the redenominated token, and the 'polkadot-new' slug stuck. There is only one DOT today.
Does DOT have a maximum supply?
Yes — since March 2026. Referendum 1710 imposed a permanent hard cap of 2.1 billion DOT, cutting annual issuance from 120 million to about 56.9 million and stepping it down every two years. Before that, DOT was uncapped and inflationary, which is why older sources say it has no max supply.
What is JAM?
The Join-Accumulate Machine, Gavin Wood's April 2024 graypaper design for replacing Polkadot's relay chain with a more general computation layer. A public testnet went live in January 2026, with dozens of independent implementation teams competing for a 10M-DOT prize pool; mainnet deployment proposals are targeted for late 2026.
What happened to parachain auctions?
They were retired. Agile Coretime, live since September 2024, replaced two-year slot auctions with blockspace sold monthly or on demand, like cloud compute. The crowdloaned DOT that auctions once locked up has been returned to holders, which removed a major supply sink from the token's economics.
Why is DOT so far below its all-time high?
The $54.98 peak of November 2021 coincided with the first parachain auctions locking supply at the top of a bull market. Since then, crowdloan unlocks, years of uncapped ~8-10% inflation, thin parachain adoption, and the 2024 treasury-spending controversy all weighed on it; DOT printed a fresh all-time low of about $0.80 in June 2026, roughly 98.5% below the peak, despite the new supply cap and a US spot ETF.
