The gap to the record
Getting back to $198.38 from here would take a 109.6× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.
All-time low
Neo's recorded all-time low is $0.0783, on October 21, 2016 (CoinGecko). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Neo's price
- The NEO/GAS dual-token mechanic: NEO is the indivisible governance token and GAS is the fuel that pays transaction, deployment and execution fees. On Neo N3, 5 GAS is minted per block and split 10% to NEO holders, 80% to voters and 10% to the committee and consensus nodes — the yield is heavily skewed toward voting, so demand for NEO is partly demand for a GAS-yielding governance position rather than pure price speculation.
- The founder and treasury dispute, stated factually: since December 2025 the two co-founders have traded public accusations. Erik Zhang has called the foundation's treasury a 'total black box', noting no public financial report since August 2020; Da Hongfei has alleged that Zhang holds roughly $200-250 million of NEO and GAS in a personal single-signature wallet and 'dictates the voting of consensus nodes'. Reporting puts the treasury near $460 million — roughly double NEO's market capitalisation. Competing restructuring proposals were published in April 2026 and neither has been adopted.
- Centralisation of block production: Neo N3 elects a 21-member committee, of which only the top seven serve as consensus nodes that actually produce blocks. The concentration is not new — in a March 2018 statement the Neo Council disclosed that it was 'managing almost 50% of all the NEO tokens' and had itself voted in all seven consensus nodes.
- Neo N3 and the Legacy sunset: N3 mainnet launched on 2 August 2021 as a full rebuild, incompatible with the old chain and requiring a token migration. Neo Legacy's mainnet was shut down permanently on 31 October 2025, with the project warning that unmigrated assets would be permanently lost.
- China policy exposure: Neo was founded and operated from Shanghai. The People's Bank of China declared initial coin offerings illegal on 4 September 2017 and declared all crypto-related transactions illegal on 24 September 2021, including offshore exchanges serving Chinese users. A China-originated chain carries policy headline risk in both directions.
- The live development signal against a ~99% drawdown: Neo X, an EVM-compatible sidechain using GAS as its native gas token, reached mainnet on 25 July 2024 with a $20 million ecosystem programme. Development continues even as the token trades near $2 against a January 2018 peak of $198.38.

About Neo
Neo began in 2014 as Antshares, founded by Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, and rebranded to Neo in 2017. Its 100 million tokens were split evenly at genesis: 50 million distributed to crowdfunding supporters and 50 million retained by the Neo Council for development, operations and ecosystem work, locked for a year and unlockable only after 16 October 2017. During the 2017-18 bull run Neo became one of the most heavily promoted altcoins, marketed around a 'smart economy' vision and widely nicknamed 'the Chinese Ethereum'. It peaked at $198.38 in January 2018 and has never come close since.
The project then rebuilt itself. Neo N3 launched on 2 August 2021, adding native oracles, distributed storage, a new governance system and a revised economic model — changes incompatible with the old chain, which forced a full token migration. That old chain, Neo Legacy, was formally retired on 31 October 2025. In parallel Neo shipped Neo X, an EVM sidechain, to mainnet in July 2024. Where it stands now is a technically maintained, multi-chain platform trading around 99% below its peak, with its governance and treasury under open and unresolved dispute between the two men who founded it.
NEO tokenomics
NEO has a fixed total supply of 100,000,000 and is indivisible: the documentation states its minimum unit is 1 and cannot be divided, which makes it a holding and governance unit rather than a payments token. Roughly 70.5 million circulate. At genesis, 50 million NEO went to crowdfunding participants and 50 million were retained by the Neo Council, locked for one year and unlockable only after 16 October 2017. Governance is on-chain: NEO holders vote for candidates, the top 21 by vote form the committee and the top 7 of those become the consensus nodes that produce blocks, with rewards recalculated every 21-block epoch. Neo N3 mints 5 GAS per block, split 10% to holders, 80% to voters and 10% to the committee and consensus nodes; a holder's GAS only settles when they transfer or vote. The Neo Foundation's last public financial report, dated August 2020, showed holdings of 42.2 million NEO, 4.07 million GAS and 4,657.88 BTC — no updated report has been published since, a gap now at the centre of the founders' dispute.
How to buy Neo
NEO trades on major spot venues including Binance (NEO/USDT), Kraken (NEO/USD) and OKX, and is recorded across roughly 50 exchanges. Note that NEO is indivisible on-chain, so exchanges quote fractional balances internally but you cannot withdraw a fraction of a NEO to a wallet. This page carries no affiliate links and recommends no venue.
Neo FAQ
What is GAS and how do you earn it?
GAS is Neo's fee token, used to pay for transfers, contract deployment and dApp execution, and it is divisible to eight decimal places. On Neo N3, 5 GAS is created per block and split 10% to NEO holders, 80% to voters and 10% to the committee and consensus nodes — so the largest share goes to NEO holders who actually vote. A holder's GAS only settles when they make a transfer or a voting transaction.
Is NEO divisible?
No. Neo's own documentation states that NEO's minimum unit is 1 and cannot be divided — you cannot hold or send 0.5 NEO on-chain. Exchanges may show fractional balances internally, but on-chain the token is a whole unit.
What was Neo N3?
A full rebuild of the chain, launched on mainnet on 2 August 2021. It added native oracles and distributed storage, a new governance system and a revised economic model. It was incompatible with the original chain, so holders had to migrate their tokens.
Does the original Neo chain still exist?
No. Neo Legacy was retired: its testnet shut down on 1 June 2025 and its mainnet on 31 October 2025. Neo warned that assets not migrated to N3 before that date would be permanently lost.
Is Neo centralised?
Block production rests with just seven consensus nodes, drawn from the top seven of 21 elected committee members. The concentration is long-standing: in March 2018 the Neo Council disclosed it was managing almost 50% of all NEO tokens and had voted in all seven consensus nodes itself. In 2026 co-founder Da Hongfei publicly alleged that one individual still effectively directs consensus-node voting.
What is the dispute between Neo's founders about?
Control of the foundation's treasury. Since December 2025 co-founder Erik Zhang has called the treasury a 'total black box', pointing out that the last public financial report is dated August 2020; co-founder Da Hongfei has alleged that Zhang holds roughly $200-250 million of NEO and GAS in a personal single-signature wallet and directs how the consensus nodes vote. Reporting puts the treasury near $460 million, about double NEO's market cap. Rival restructuring proposals were published in April 2026; neither has been adopted, and the dispute is unresolved.
