Circulating supply is 612,824 XAUt , with no fixed maximum supply. XAUt has no fixed cap: tokens are minted when gold is purchased and burned on redemption, so supply tracks the ounces in custody. Its market cap therefore moves with both token issuance and the gold price itself.

The gap to the record
Getting back to $5,505 from here would take a 1.4× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko.

What moves Tether Gold's price
- The gold spot price — by construction the dominant driver. Real interest rates, dollar strength, central-bank buying, and geopolitical risk flow through to XAUt almost one-for-one; the 2024–25 gold rally is why XAUt's price and market cap sit at record levels.
- On-chain premium or discount to spot: XAUt's secondary-market liquidity is thin next to the bullion market, so it can trade slightly above or below spot gold until issuance/redemption arbitrage pulls it back.
- Issuer trust: XAUt's value rests on Tether custodying the metal it claims. Tether publishes attestations and a bar list for the gold, and its broader record is part of the risk picture — in 2021 Tether paid an $18.5M settlement to the New York Attorney General and a $41M CFTC fine over historical misstatements about USDT's reserves. Pricing XAUt means pricing that issuer history alongside the metal.
- Competition with PAXG: Paxos's NYDFS-regulated gold token is the direct alternative; venue listings, fees, and jurisdictional preferences shift flows between the two.
- Crypto-native flight-to-hard-assets: in risk-off crypto episodes, tokenized gold attracts rotation from stablecoins and volatile assets without leaving the rails — visible as volume spikes uncorrelated with gold itself.

About Tether Gold
Tether Gold launched in January 2020, issued by TG Commodities Limited, part of the Tether group behind USDT. Each XAUt represents ownership of one fine troy ounce of gold on specific London Good Delivery bars stored in Switzerland, and holders can look up the bar serial numbers backing their tokens on Tether's site.
The product is aimed at holding allocated gold with crypto settlement: no storage fees while holding, transferable in fractions down to six decimal places, and redeemable — for holders of sufficient size — for the physical bars themselves in Switzerland. As gold rallied through 2024–25, XAUt's market value grew past $2.5 billion, putting it among the largest real-world-asset tokens of any kind.
XAUt tokenomics
There is no supply schedule in the crypto sense: XAUt is minted against gold purchases through Tether and burned when redeemed, with fees applied on issuance and redemption. The token itself pays no yield — it is a claim on vaulted metal, not a productive asset — and supply data equals ounces under custody, published in Tether's gold attestations and bar list.
How to buy Tether Gold
XAUt trades on crypto exchanges including Bitfinex, Bybit, and KuCoin, and can be acquired directly from Tether subject to its onboarding and minimums. It is held in ordinary Ethereum-compatible wallets; redemption for physical bars requires full-bar quantities (roughly 400-ounce London bars) and delivery in Switzerland.

Is XAUt actually backed by physical gold?
Tether publishes attestations and a bar list identifying the London Good Delivery bars in Swiss custody, and each holder's tokens map to specific bar serials. As with any custodial asset, the claim ultimately rests on the issuer — Tether's 2021 NYAG and CFTC settlements over past USDT reserve disclosures are part of that assessment, stated here because it belongs in any honest description of the product.
Can you redeem XAUt for real gold?
Yes — verified holders can redeem for physical gold in Switzerland, but only in full-bar quantities (a Good Delivery bar is roughly 400 oz, so redemption is practical only at institutional size). Smaller holders exit by selling the token.
Why does XAUt's price differ slightly from the gold price?
The token trades on its own order books, which are far thinner than the bullion market. Small premiums or discounts open up and are closed by arbitrage through issuance and redemption.
How does XAUt compare with PAXG?
Both are 1:1 allocated-gold tokens on Ethereum. PAXG is issued by Paxos under a New York trust charter with monthly regulator-mandated attestations; XAUt is issued by Tether from Switzerland with its own attestation regime, and is the larger of the two by market value. The choice is largely about issuer and jurisdiction preference.
Does holding XAUt earn anything?
No. XAUt is a claim on vaulted gold — there is no staking or yield, and Tether charges no ongoing custody fee. Returns come only from the gold price.
