Over the past 30 days TAO has moved −9.25% and over the past 90 days −34.16%.

Circulating supply is 11,187,218 TAO , against a maximum supply of 21,000,000 TAO. TAO copies Bitcoin's monetary policy: a 21 million hard cap with emissions that halve at issuance thresholds. The first halving executed in December 2025, cutting daily issuance from 7,200 to 3,600 TAO, and just over half the cap is now in circulation — much of it staked to validators and subnets rather than liquid on exchanges.

The gap to the record

Getting back to $757.60 from here would take a 4.0× move — that multiple, not the percentage, is the honest way to read a drawdown. The figure above updates every hour as our price snapshot refreshes; the record itself is an editorial fact recorded from CoinGecko - Bittensor.

All-time low

Bittensor's recorded all-time low is $30.83, on May 14, 2023 (CoinGecko - Bittensor). From that low to today's price is the other end of the same story — aggregators differ on launch-era data, so we name the source we cite.

What moves Bittensor's price

  • The AI trade: TAO moves with decentralized-AI sentiment broadly — AI funding cycles, model releases, and flows into the ai-tokens cohort land on it as the category's largest network by market cap.
  • The halving schedule: daily emissions halved from 7,200 to 3,600 TAO in December 2025, the first of a Bitcoin-style series, and each supply-cut milestone reframes the scarcity narrative.
  • ETF and institutional flows: Grayscale filed in December 2025 to convert its Bittensor Trust into a NYSE Arca-listed ETF (Bitwise has filed too), and DCG's Yuma subsidiary — Barry Silbert's dedicated Bittensor arm — makes one financier's ecosystem-wide accumulation a watched signal in both directions.
  • Subnet activity under dTAO: since the February 2025 dynamic-TAO upgrade, each subnet has its own tradable 'alpha' token and stake-weighted share of emissions, so subnet-token booms pull TAO in as the reserve asset — and subnet washouts drain it.
  • Incentive-integrity questions: the network has documented gaming vectors — validators copying others' scores instead of evaluating work ('weight copying', now mitigated by commit-reveal), and criticism that some subnets capture emissions without producing verifiable value — and evidence in either direction moves conviction in the core mechanism.
  • Security and governance events: in July 2024 a malicious PyPI package drained about $8 million of TAO from user wallets and the Opentensor Foundation halted the chain in response — a reminder both of key-management risk and of how centralized emergency control still is.

About Bittensor

Bittensor, founded by Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana and live since 2021 on its own Substrate-based chain, pays for machine intelligence the way Bitcoin pays for hashpower. The network is organized into subnets, each a marketplace for a specific task — text inference, image generation, data feeds — where miners submit work, validators score it, and TAO emissions flow to the best performers. The February 2025 dynamic-TAO (dTAO) upgrade replaced a committee of root validators with a market: every subnet issues its own 'alpha' token, and staking TAO into a subnet's pool is what steers emissions toward it.

Its history includes hard tests stated plainly: in July 2024 a malicious package uploaded to PyPI (masquerading as Bittensor version 6.12.2) stole users' private keys and drained roughly 32,000 TAO (~$8 million); the Opentensor Foundation put the chain into 'safe mode' within 35 minutes, halting transactions while it removed the package and published a post-mortem. Researchers and the foundation itself have also documented 'weight copying' — validators free-riding on others' scores — and critics argue some subnets earn emissions without producing verifiable value. On the demand side, Digital Currency Group founder Barry Silbert has made Bittensor his signature post-Bitcoin bet: DCG's Yuma subsidiary incubates subnets, Yuma Asset Management launched in late 2025, and Grayscale filed that December to list a spot Bittensor ETF.

TAO tokenomics

TAO's supply is hard-capped at 21 million with no pre-mine and no investor allocation — every token has entered circulation as emissions to miners, validators, subnet owners, and stakers. Issuance halves at Bitcoin-style thresholds: the first halving hit in December 2025 at 10.5 million issued (7,200 → 3,600 TAO per day), with the next at 15.75 million, tapering toward zero over the following decade. Since the dTAO upgrade, part of each subnet's rewards accrue in its own alpha token, with TAO acting as the reserve asset that all subnet pools trade against.

SUPPLY
TAO copies Bitcoin's monetary policy: a 21 million hard cap with emissions that halve at issuance thresholds.

How to buy Bittensor

TAO trades on major exchanges including Binance, Coinbase, and Kraken. It is a native coin on Bittensor's own chain, so self-custody means a Bittensor wallet (the official Bittensor Wallet or Talisman); holders can delegate stake to validators or into subnets for yield. US investors may also get exposure via the Grayscale Bittensor Trust, with spot ETF applications pending.

Bittensor FAQ

What does Bittensor actually pay people to do?

Machine-learning work. Each subnet defines a task — running language-model inference, generating images, serving data — and miners compete to do it well. Validators score the output, and TAO emissions are distributed according to those scores, so the token functions as a bounty for useful AI work rather than for hashing.

Does TAO really have a 21 million cap like Bitcoin?

Yes. Supply is hard-capped at 21 million with halvings at issuance thresholds — the first cut daily emissions from 7,200 to 3,600 TAO in December 2025. Unlike Bitcoin, emissions pay for AI work rather than mining, and there was no pre-mine or investor allocation.

What is dTAO?

The dynamic-TAO upgrade, live since February 13, 2025. It gave every subnet its own token (an 'alpha') and a liquidity pool against TAO; staking TAO into a subnet swaps it for that alpha, and the pools' relative prices decide each subnet's share of emissions — replacing a 64-validator committee with a market.

What happened in the July 2024 Bittensor hack?

A malicious version of the Bittensor software package on PyPI stole users' private keys, draining about 32,000 TAO (~$8 million). The Opentensor Foundation halted the chain in 'safe mode' within about 35 minutes, removed the package, published a post-mortem, and told affected users to migrate to new wallets. The chain itself was not exploited — user keys were.

What is Barry Silbert's connection to Bittensor?

Silbert's Digital Currency Group launched Yuma, a subsidiary dedicated to incubating Bittensor subnets, and Yuma Asset Management followed in late 2025. Grayscale, also DCG-founded, runs a Bittensor Trust and filed in December 2025 to convert it into a spot ETF. Silbert has called Bittensor his most exciting discovery since Bitcoin — concentrated backing that cuts both ways.
