ZEC market data ahead of Zcash's Ironwood upgrade

ZEC market data ahead of Zcash's Ironwood upgrade — Technology · CryptoNewsAlert feature card

What Ironwood is in the Zcash spec

Ironwood is a set of protocol changes tracked through the Zcash Improvement Proposal (ZIP) process. According to the ZIP index, the NU6.3 candidate list includes ZIP 2005: Ironwood Quantum Recoverability (marked Proposed), ZIP 318: Orchard to Ironwood Migration (Reserved), and ZIP 2006: Restricting Transfers into the Orchard Pool (Reserved). Together these describe a migration path out of the current Orchard shielded pool toward an Ironwood construction with quantum-recoverability properties.

The same index notes that NU6.3 as a whole is defined by ZIP 258, and that a separate NU7 track is under consideration with a distinct set of ZIPs — including 25-second block spacing (ZIP 218), memo bundles (ZIP 231) and network-sustainability mechanisms (ZIPs 233–235). The official upgrade page lists NU7 as the planned ninth major network upgrade and notes it will not be supported by the legacy zcashd client if it carries major consensus changes.

How the market is pricing it

This is the part a wire announcement won’t carry. Using our CoinMarketCap data as of July 9, 2026, ZEC trades at about $489.81. It is up 4.89% over the prior 24 hours, up 12.36% over seven days, and up 10.04% over 30 days — a market cap of roughly $8.21 billion.

The shape of those moves matters more than any single figure. The seven-day gain (12.36%) is larger than the full 30-day gain (10.04%), which — from our CoinMarketCap data — means most of the month’s appreciation is concentrated in the most recent week rather than spread evenly across the period. In plain terms, the recent leg has outpaced the earlier part of the month.

Trading activity supports that read. Reported 24-hour volume is about $400.83 million against the $8.21 billion market cap. Dividing the two gives a turnover ratio of roughly 4.88% of market cap changing hands in a day (computed from our CoinMarketCap data) — a level of participation consistent with an actively traded asset rather than a dormant one.

None of this is a forecast. It is a snapshot of positioning as the Ironwood-related ZIPs move through the candidate stage. Readers can compare these figures over time on the ZEC price page and against other assets in the layer-1 category.

Where the upgrade stands in the pipeline

An important caveat for anyone timing this event: the released ZIP index presents the Ironwood components as candidates and reservations, not settled consensus rules. ZIP 2005 carries Proposed status, while ZIP 318 and ZIP 2006 are Reserved. The index also states plainly that for the NU7 track, “no decision has been made on whether to include each of these ZIPs,” and that a deployment draft (draft-arya-deploy-nu7) will define the final contents.

The most recent settled upgrade documented in the index is NU6.2, which activated at mainnet block height 3364600 on June 3, 2026, at 04:03 UTC. That gives a concrete reference point for how Zcash upgrades land: a specific block height rather than a wall-clock promise, with the two roughly converging at activation.

The security backdrop

Ironwood’s migration goals sit against a recent, unusually active security period for Zcash. The v6.20.0 release notes describe NU6.2 as an immediate upgrade deployed to remediate a critical flaw in the Orchard zero-knowledge proof circuit — a bug that, per those notes, could have permitted minting of funds within the Orchard pool, though user privacy and the total supply cap were stated to be unaffected.

The v6.12.5 notes go further, documenting a coordinated soft fork that temporarily disabled Orchard actions as a precautionary measure (advisory GHSA-ghc3-g8w4-whf9), alongside a batch of consensus and denial-of-service fixes described as a “time-critical upgrade.” That context helps explain why the current roadmap emphasizes moving value out of the Orchard pool — ZIP 2006 restricts transfers into it, and ZIP 318 defines the Orchard-to-Ironwood migration, per the ZIP index.

What to watch

For readers tracking Ironwood, the verifiable milestones are the ZIP status changes on the ZIP index, a finalized deployment draft naming which ZIPs ship, and a tagged client release with an activation height on the zcash GitHub releases page. Product updates from the Electric Coin Company blog — which has recently focused on the Zashi wallet and exchange integrations — provide surrounding ecosystem context. On the market side, the figures above give a baseline: near $489.81, a $8.21 billion cap, and roughly 4.88% daily turnover as the work advances.
